The World: Sick, a former head of Yukos gets bail

A Russian court has ordered, Monday, December 8, bail Vasily Alexanian, a former vice-president of Russian oil group Yukos, in custody since April 2006 and suffering from AIDS, tuberculosis and cancer.

At a hearing open to the press, a Moscow judge set the bond at 50 million rubles (1.4 million). Mr. Alexanian, a former right arm of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the main accused in the Yukos case, is accused of embezzlement and tax evasion. Justice had agreed in February to be hospitalized. His release will be effective on payment of the bond.
