Why No Period After D And C

AFP via The Express: New trial: Khodorkovsky risk 22 years in prison and a half additional

MOSCOW - The former boss of Russian oil group Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, was transferred from Siberia to Moscow to be held from March 3 as part of a new case where he faces up to 22 ½ years in prison further, a new political trial, experts said.

sentenced in 2005 to eight years for tax evasion and fraud large scale, Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been transferred on Tuesday in the Moscow prison Matrosskaya Tichina to be tried this time for "embezzlement", "embezzlement" and for "illegal financial transactions."

"The misappropriation of funds and is liable to a maximum of 10 years in prison and illegal operations of 15 years, but the cumulative penalty not to exceed 150% of the latter, it might therefore 22 years and a half additional prison, "he told AFP spokesperson Maksim rescattering of his defense.

"The court may still confuse the first sentence of eight years "with the possible new conviction, he added.

" Theoretically, this charge includes more than 20 years in prison, but we will fight to show how absurd it is, "he told AFP one of the lawyers for Mr. Khodorkovsky, Karina Moskalenko.

Many experts consider this new folder as a political issue.

"Some senior Officials are worried that once released Khodorkovsky can become a symbol of opposition to the population as a crisis, "said analyst Valery Khomyakov.

Indeed, the proportion of supporters of former tycoon has doubled since his arrest in 2004, from 9% to 18%, according to a Levada Center poll conducted in January.

In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, the sworn enemy of Khodorkovsky and leader of the 'siloviki' former KGB and the army placed at the top of the state, "opposes a possible release of the oligarch, "says Khomyakov. Mr Sechin

"just would not feel that Mr. Khodorkovsky reveals the truth about privatization of state assets enjoyed by the deputy prime minister," says Khomyakov, who co-chairs the Council for National Strategy.

Yet this NGO that published the 2003 report "The state and the oligarchs" denouncing "the threat posed to state" these all-powerful businessmen, including Khodorkovsky.

"The authorities are now treating as a conspirator, but we are not asking to put the oligarchs in prison, it was enough to remove from power," says he told AFP.

In February 2007, more than two years after the first conviction of the former richest man in Russia, announced that prosecutors have opened this new investigation. The former head

Yukos and his associate Platon Lebedev are now accused of doing illegal operations for a total of 896 billion rubles (about $ 25 billion at current exchange rates) between 1998 and 2003.

"Many things are wrong with this case," said Yuri Kostanov, the Independent Counsel Law Experts.

"The Russian tax legislation is so vague that many entrepreneurs might find themselves in the place of Khodorkovsky," added the lawyer.

This week, Mr Khodorkovsky is also on trial on charges of sexual harassment made by his ex-cellmate Alexander Kuchma, but denounced by another inmate as "completely fanciful".

A view shared by the lawyers of former Yukos boss, that Mr. Kuchma, who can "neither read nor write," have been exploited by the enemies of their client.

"Today (Tuesday) the criminal case with the final conclusions of the charge were sent to court Khamovniki Moscow to be studied on its merits, "said the prosecutor's investigative committee in a statement.

" I am sure that the evidence collected leaves no doubt about the guilt of Khodorkovsky and Lebedev ", for his part said the Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika, in an interview published Wednesday in the newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta Interfax which published excerpts on Tuesday.

lawyers MM. Khodorkovsky and Lebedev for their part said they received the 14 volumes of the indictment signed by the Attorney General, Victor Grinyer.

"The bureaucracy of the police have lost several years, enormous sums of money belonging to the state and a huge part of their reputation for making these accusations notoriously ridiculous," said the defense of two detainees in a statement.

"These are particularly serious crimes," Mr Chaika said.

The prosecution announced it had opened this new survey in February 2007 against the former richest man in Russia.

Last August, a court in the Siberian city of Chita, near the place of detention of Mr. Khodorkovsky, has refused to grant him early release even though he had served more than half his prison sentence for tax evasion.

observers of Russian politics believe that the legal problems of several Yukos managers were primarily due to opposition to the regime of Mr Khodorkovsky's then president, Vladimir Putin.

Danica Patrick in F1 in 2010?

While my book has just appeared, women's presence in Formula 1 again becomes relevant.

Indeed, the project team USF1 American, who hopes to be present in 2010, could apply to the IndyCar star Danica Patrick to become one of its pilots. For the Technical Project Manager, Ken Anderson, " It is wonderful, she has many fallout in the press (...) I do not know if F1 is something she wants to do, but we would definitely offer him a test and then look from there ".

Does Keri Hilson Have A Weave

AP, via Le Nouvel Observateur: New charges against Khodorkovsky

New charges of embezzlement and organized crime have been launched against the former richest man Mikhail Khodorkovsky in Russia, which already serving a sentence of eight years in prison in Siberia for fraud, said the attorney general's office Monday. A former opponent of Vladimir Putin is therefore likely not to find freedom in 2011 as planned.

The attorney general's office said in a statement that the prisoner when he headed the Russian oil giant Yukos had joined a group of investors to defraud a Siberian oil company of 3.6 billion rubles (about 80 million euros, 102 million) and other companies billions of rubles as well.

Arrested in 2003, Mikhail Khodorkovsky was sentenced in 2005 to eight years in prison for tax evasion and fraud. He was denied parole last August. His business partner Platon Lebedev was also sentenced to eight years in prison and is subject to the same new charges.

Defending Khodorkovsky condemned from the beginning a political trial for breaking the political ambitions of a powerful opponent of then President and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. One lawyer, Yuri Schmidt, said that new charges had "no sense".

After the arrest of its CEO, Yukos has been dismantled, its main activities being taken up by a group controlled by the state.

Watch Family Guy In Quicktime

Matrix Reloaded: Khodorkovsky trial - bis.

If there long as the "second Khodorkovsky case was launched, and that the charges are known, many thought that the trial would never occur. Several arguments for this: one could assume that times had changed, that the enemies of Khodorkovsky in the circles of power had lost their influence, and there was no interest nor political nor economic to keep Khodorkovsky in prison , let alone give him a new sentence. Moreover, the accusations against him seem so absurd from the standpoint of simple logic (how a company executive accused of diverting a sum greater than the turnover of his company?) that one could believe they would never be brought before a court. Finally, the scandal Aleksanian had lifted the veil on the methods used by investigators to obtain evidence against him. In any civilized country, the revelations about the survey methods were sufficient to close the file once and for all. But not in Russia.
fact remains that we do not see very well the reasons for this second trial. Khodorkovsky has long ceased to be a hatred for his fellow citizens, and it is very unlikely that this trial on the facts already past, a lot of interest in the Russian population and is sufficient to channel the growing discontent of the Russian response to the crisis, unemployment and government's negligence.
Anyway a second trial is about to begin, and the Observatory will try to follow him through the French press (Russian and if need be).
